Does the time of day affect the cost?
Yes, many utility companies offer "Time-of-Use" (TOU) rates where electricity is cheaper during off-peak hours (usually at night). Charging during these times can significantly reduce your costs compared to the average rates used here.
Where is it cheapest to charge?
Generally, states with low residential electricity rates (like Washington, Idaho, and Louisiana) are the cheapest places to charge. Home charging is almost always cheaper than public DC fast charging.
Methodology
Our calculations are based on average residential electricity rates sourced from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) and current fuel prices from AAA. We assume home charging for EVs, which represents the majority of charging sessions.
